CBI is responsible for a wide variety of criminal and national security matters.
The Indian Government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 3.08 crores for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the Plan Scheme of CBI e-Governance for setting up a Wide Area Network and other e-Governance applications. This information was given by Prithviraj Chavan, minister of state in the ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions, in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha Thursday.
The Central Bureau of Investigation is an investigating agency, responsible for a wide variety of criminal and national security matters. It was established on 1 April 1963 and evolved from the Special Police Establishment founded in 1941.
As on 31 December 2008, 1,005 cases were pending investigation in CBI. The time taken to complete investigation of cases depends on the nature of cases, number of witnesses to be examined and number and type of documents to be scrutinised.
“Though it is the endeavour of CBI to complete investigation in all cases at the earliest, no specific timeframe can be prescribed for completion of investigation. There is a laid down system in the CBI or regularly reviewing the progress of cases under investigation with a view to finalise them early,” the minister explained.
